Top Ten Books I'd Want
On A Deserted Island

The Wilderness Survival Guide (Joe O'Leary)
Obvious choice.
Living of the Land (Chris McNab)
I wonder if there is a vegetarian edition of this book?
The Worst-Case Scenario Almanac: The Great Outdoors (David Borgenicht)
Because things that can go wrong, will go wrong.
The Optimist's Handbook (Niall Edworthy & Petra Cramsie)
Where would I be without hope? Still on that darn island, I guess.
Stranded: Rock and Roll for a Desert Island (Greil Marcus)
Soundtrack? Mandatory.
The Swiss Family Robinson (Johann David Wyss)
You never know what you can learn here ...
Robinson Crusoe (Daniel Defoe)
... or here.

And finally ...

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Opening a Coconut (Author Unknown)
Because it looks easier than it actually is.

The Ultimate Guide to Building a Boat Made Solely of Coconuts (Author Unknown)
Once you manage to open a coconut, the rest is easy peasy.

101 Coconut Recipes (Author Unknown)
And if all else fails (or sinks) I can at least try variations of the same ol' coconut stew.

Which books would you want on a desert island?

  1. LOOOOL! your post reminded me of when I first tried to open a coconut with a hammer and a knife, then moved to a saw file... geez! :)

    1. I never tried this myself, which is why I'd need those coconut books on the island!!

  2. If I'm stranded on an island, I hope it's with you. Your book choices are so much more sensible than mine. Mine would be my favorite books, which are good but not practical.

    1. Woah ... I sure hope neither of us finds themselves on a deserted island. But hey, at least you could build a fire at night with your books (if all else fails, ya know).

    1. Ha, I saw your list and was rendered speechless! And you didn't even include ONE lousy survival guide to compliment all those series *shakes head*.

  4. I love your list!!! I did this topic a while back and mine was a mix of practical and pleasure reading.

    1. I guess I was overcome by dread just thinking about surviving on the island that reading for pleasure didn't really cross my mind when I made that list. A mix sounds like a good idea though!

    1. You're laughing? You wouldn't be if you sat on that island, coconut in hand, unable to open it ...

  6. Nice! I only chose one survival guide. I'd much rather be stranded with you.

    1. I'd much rather not be stranded in the first place, ha, but yeah, I'd have the right literature to make living the island life a wee bit easier.

  7. Imagine if there are no coconuts on the island you're stranded on...

  8. Haha, I think if you were stranded you'd have to accept being an "organic"vore ;-)
